Environmental Voter Project Uses VotePlus10 to Expand Its Base
More and more US voters are recognizing the importance of addressing climate change, but why isn’t that translating into national policy?
In a recent study, Pew Research Center found that 64 percent of Americans believe that the environment needs to be a top priority for both President Trump and Congress. However, environmentalists in the United States are often referred to as a ‘Silent Green Majority’ since over 10 million of them don’t actually cast their ballots.
Environmental Voter Project is working hard to break the silence, and its mission is two-fold: First, it is a nonprofit organization laser-focused on identifying inactive environmentalists and turning them into consistent voters. Second, it does so in a totally nonpartisan way. Environmental Voter Project is dedicated to increasing electoral demand for environmental leadership so that climate change and the environment become priorities for all policymakers.
“10.1 million environmentalists who are registered to vote skipped the 2016 election, or about 50%, while 68% of all registered voters cast a ballot that year. And in the 2014 midterm elections, 15.8 million environmentalists failed to vote, leaving just 21% of environmentalists to cast ballots compared with 44 percent of registered voters overall.”
Given our focus on peer-to-peer engagement and relational organizing, VotePlus10 was a natural fit for Environmental Voter Project to further engage and expand its base across the country in the lead-up to the 2020 election.
Why have you chosen to work with VotePlus10?
“VotePlus10 is a great tool for individuals interested in the Environmental Voter Project (EVP) to move up and across the ladder of engagement and encourage their like-minded friends to join them. VotePlus10 makes it easy for activists to learn about EVP and get plugged into our work.”
Shannon Seigal, Organizing Director at Environmental Voter Project
Voter turnout is very important to EVP. Rather than attempting to win certain elections with specific politicians, EVP focuses on the voters and the ways in which they can do their part to create an impact on the attention and money spent on climate change in the U.S.
Environmental Voter Project’s action hub is filled with ways to get involved and make a difference, such as donating, signing pledges, and completing actions to meet the mission of EVP. In addition to completing these actions, EVP supporters and their networks are able to create their own customized civic journeys using the VotePlus10 platform, with actions ranging from checking their vote-by-mail status to completing more actions to help stop climate change and other issues they care about.
Environmental Voter Project also secured a $3,000 action pledge, meaning that for every action completed by someone in EVP’s VotePlus10 network before Sunday October 4th, the organization will get a $0.50 donation. If you are interested in adding to this pledge, send an email here.
We are proud to be supporting EVP and their goal to increase environmental voter turnout in the United States. Together, organizations like EVP and VotePlus10 are making it easy for everyone to complete simple actions around the issues they care about, which, in the end, will make a big difference. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work,” so let’s get to work.
